Pieropan Soave Classico

Pieropan Soave Classico

2015 75c

Joe Fattorini’s Tasting Note: “One of the great summer wines, this is everything Soave should be. Lightly aromatic, fresh and youthful. Its gentle citrus and almond blossom aromas complement rather than compete so make for a wonderful food matching wine. Baked fish with a squeeze of lemon, summer salads, grilled vegetables and seafood. All delicious.”

Their liveliest and most youthful style from Soave Classico, the Pieropan family has been producing this wine since the early 1900’s.

Generous, pleasingly fresh and versatile, it is made from the traditional varieties of Garganega and Trebbiano di Soave grown in family- owned vineyards situated in the Soave Classico zone.

Brilliant straw yellow colour with greenish hints.

The delicate nose is reminiscent of almond blossoms and marzipan.

Good depth of fruit on the palate, nicely balanced by a zingy acidity that enhances its long length.

Awards: James Suckling – 92/100, Wine Spectator – 88/100, Decanter Magazine – 93/100.

Food Pairing Suggestions: It makes an excellent partner for soups, starters, especially vegetable based such as asparagus, peas, courgette, egg-based dishes or seafood and fresh water fish dishes. It is an excellent aperitif, especially when served with simple canapés. Serve at 12°C.

The Manufacturer

Boschendal – A winemaking heritage going back to the 17th Century

Few places in the world can claim to have all a wine lover could desire. Boschendal Winery is one such unique destination. Only an hour’s drive from Cape Town, this magnificent winery is situated in the picturesque Groot Drakenstein Valley, at the gateway to Franschhoek. A veritable feast for the senses, Boschendal lays claim to a proud winemaking tradition stretching back to the late 17th century. From award winning wines, to fine dining and exquisite grounds, this world class estate seamlessly blends its rich past with a tireless commitment to constant innovation.

Our History

  • Boschendal, literally “Bossendaal” (wood and dale) farm, is one of the oldest wine producers in the New World
  • The French Huguenot, Jean Le Long was granted the land in 1685, after escaping France’s religious persecution.
  • In 1715 the property was purchased by fellow Huguenots, the De Villiers brothers.
  • The elegant Manor House, an outstanding example of Cape Dutch architecture, was built in 1812.
  • After remaining in the De Villiers family for 164 years, the farm was sold to a Dutch farmer, D J Retief. After the disastrous phylloxera plague of 1896 destroyed the vineyards in the area, Prime Minister of the Cape Colony and South African visionary, Cecil John Rhodes, purchased the property in partnership with De Beers and set about restoring it to its former glory.

Our Vineyards

Boschendal is ideally situated for the cultivation of quality grapes. Comprised of around 2250 hectares, stretching for six kilometres along the slopes of the Groot Drakenstein Mountain to the slopes of Simonsberg Mountain, the size and position of our vineyards allows a variety of cultivars to flourish Our vineyards are situated on different soils and at various altitudes, from the valley floor to 350 metres above sea level, allowing for a variety of styles. Particular care is taken to earmark individual blocks for specific styles. The cool growing conditions produce elegant wines, relatively low in sugar, yet bursting with ripe fruit flavours.

We are committed to ensuring that a sustainable environmental and agricultural equilibrium is maintained. Boschendal is home to pristine tracts of indigenous fynbos, part of the Cape Floral Kingdom. Through sound agricultural practices in the vineyard and a minimalist approach in the cellar, Boschendal has taken active steps to protect its unique natural diversity. Our goal is to ensure that human wellbeing, environmental health and economic viability can co-exist in harmony.

Woodstock Octogenerian Grenache Tempranillo

Woodstock Octogenerian Grenache Tempranillo

Winemaking

Grenache grapes were picked on 10th March 2013 at 15.5 Baume during a warm, early vintage. Grapes were traditionally fermented on skins and pumped over twice daily. The Tempranillo component was fermented separately and aged in old oak barrels before approx. 12% was blended to the Grenache, adding a savoury length and finish to this wine.

The Wine

Bright colour and lifted aromas of cherries, plums and raspberries. Tempranillo adds dried spice notes to the nose and savoury tannins to the palate. Lively and expressive on both nose and palate, this Grenache Tempranillo blend captures true McLaren Vale characters; silky structure with subtle complexities making it a great food companion.

Serving Suggestion

Enjoy with a selection of Spanish tapas or a nice smoked duck on the BBQ.

A lifted nose displaying enticing aromatics of rhubarb, raspberries plums with hints of caraway seed anise and subtle white pepper spice.
Contrasting on the palate with rich flavoursome red cherries balanced by a bright acid structure and soft yet crunchy tannins.

Medium body in style with a long lingering finish and classic Grenache texture. Cellaring will also be rewarded for 4 to 5 years as the secondary characters evolve in bottle.

Tasting Note From Buyer: Aromatics of rhubarb and red cherries with hints of caraway seed, anise and subtle white pepper spice.

For decades we and our neighbours tended to our frugal Grenache vines on sandy soils at Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale.

Commonly referred to as 80 year old vines, or “Perpetual Octogenarians”, their pedigree of quality became more evident over the decades. When the opportunity arose to become the next custodians of more of these meagre cropping, gnarly vines, the Collett family embraced them in 1988.

Woodstock Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon

Woodstock Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon

Winemaking

Woodstock 2011 vintage was very wet in all of South Eastern Australia. Our lower yielding vines with open leaf canopies were able to dry out between rain showers and ripen the small crops. Some vines in certain protected microclimate sites were unable to dry out and therefore excluded from our winemaking.  After fermentation on skins for a minimum of 5 days, this Shiraz was barrel aged for up to 14 months in carefully selected French and American oak barrels. 15% sees new oak barrels while the rest mature in 2 to 3 year old oak for complexity without oak domination.

The Wine

The Woodstock 2011 Shiraz shows a deep vibrant cerise colour with some youthful purple hues. An aromatic display of  savoury oak, ripe red berries and dark cherries with hints of cinnamon. The palate is coated with lush bursts of mulberries and spice,  joined by soft, youthful tannins and some balanced acidity which completes the structure. These youthful characters provide great promise for 3 to 5 years to come. This unique 2011 vintage offers softer tannins than normal, but retains that characteristic rich middle palate flavor of McLaren Vale.

Serving Suggestion

Tandoori lamb cutlets with spiced baked potatoes and green beans.
